Here is some history of the creation and current structure of Brazil.
The Portuguese were the first European settlers to arrive in Brazil. They were led by Pedro Cabral who first encountered the Native Americans there who numbered in the millions. The Native Americans there at the time were cannibalistic people. Cabral, when he arrived, was less focused on conquering the land and the natives there, but they were interested in finding treasure, mainly gold. They found the Brazil wood tree that produced red dye. The sugar trade moved into Brazil which brought a wide variety of people, including European, African slaves, Asian, and Middle Easterners. Because of this the people living in Brazil now are a great mix of all of those different peoples.
Brazil, currently, has the 6th largest population in the world-- about 148 million people. Which has been doubling for the past thirty years. Because of it's size there are about fifteen people per square kilometer. This is concentrated mostly in the larger cities.
Brazil is a federal republic with 26 states and a federal district. There are fifteen political parties in their Congress, and their president holds office for 4 years.
